Signs & symptoms

  • sudden decrease in level of consciousness
  • weakness or paralysis, especially on one side of the body
  • feeling of numbness in face, arms or legs
  • difficulty speaking or understanding
  • unexplained dizziness
  • disturbed vision
  • loss of balance
  • confusion.

If you recognise the signs of STROKE act FAST

  • Facial weakness
  • Arm weakness
  • Speech difficulty
  • Time to act fast

What to do

Unconscious patient

1. Follow DRSABCD.

2. Place in the recovery position.

3. Ensure an ambulance has been called.

Conscious patient

1. Follow DRSABCD.

2. Calm and reassure the patient.

3. Support head and shoulders on pillows.

4. Loosen tight clothing.

5. Maintain body temperature.

6. Wipe away secretions from mouth.

7. Ensure an ambulance has been called.
