One out of every five Australians has a disability (Australian Human Rights Commission). As a parent of a child with a disability, you will want to know that your child’s teacher and school are equipped to assist them in their learning.

Access to education helps to eliminate disadvantage and protects vulnerable children. This is essential to lifelong economic and social wellbeing. (Victorian Human Rights Commission).

All education authorities throughout Australia have developed plans for providing support to students with disabilities. These include:

• providing services by health or allied health specialists (such as occupational therapy) within a school
• making adjustments to the curriculum to meet the individual learning needs of each student
• providing assistive technology to support students’ learning in the classroom.
