SABRE – Smoke Alarm and Battery Replacement

The SABRE (Smoke Alarm and Battery REplacement) program is designed to support the elderly, residing in their own homes and that have limited domestic support*, to live independently and remain valuable assets in the community. The program sees Fire and Rescue NSW forming partnerships with other community organisations to assist senior citizens in the maintenance of their fire safety devices.

Smoke Alarms for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired

There are specialised smoke alarms available for people who are Deaf or have a hearing impairment. These have a flashing strobe light and/or a vibrating pad that can be placed under the pillow which activate when the smoke alarm sounds and are designed to interconnect with conventional audible alarms in different locations within the home.

For community service workers: Basic home fire safety training materials

Basic home fire safety information is now included in the qualifications for a range of community services workers. The lesson materials for this have been centrally developed to ensure their application and use in all states and territories. In addition to their use in formal training the material is also recommended for use by community agencies in staff induction for new workers and skills maintenance for existing workers.
