Internet Safety: Parents

Online Shopping

Online shopping and banking

For many people, online banking is a convenient way to access accounts and manage finances. Online banking provides instant access to accounts, enabling users to easily transfer money, pay bills and keep track of spending.

If you have concerns about the legitimacy of a banking website contact the bank direct using a known phone number from the White Pages to verify their website address and details. When transacting on the website look for ‘https://’ in the website’s address and a locked padlock in the bottom of the screen.

Online shopping

Online shops, also called e-stores, virtual shops or online stores, offer consumer goods or services over the internet. Online shoppers create accounts, view goods and services on the website and use credit cards or other methods to pay for transactions. With a few basic precautions, it is safe to shop online. Shopping with well-established and recognised retailers who use secure websites for transactions is a good start. Look for ‘https://’ in the website’s address and a locked padlock in the bottom of the screen. Read store reviews and check the reputation of sellers on auction sites.
