Think about how each rule can help us all to learn, to develop caring and respectful relationships and to keep safe.

What might happen if we didn’t have these rules?

Think about the library. How are rules in the library different from those in the classroom?

Look at your map of the school and think about different school rules for these areas:

• classrooms
• playground
• canteen
• corridors
• school hall
• specialist rooms
• toilets
• library
• office
• car pick-up area.

Watch this video of students as they walk around their school describing how their school rules help to keep students and staff safe.

In groups, go on a school rules walk, visiting all the different areas of your school. Take the map of the school plus the different coloured stickers. You will use the stickers to show different rule types. For example, red stickers could be used to show safety rules.

When your group comes to a different area in the school, talk about the rules for that area and decide what types of rules they are.

Then put coloured stickers on that area of the map to show the types of rules for that area. For example, if you have a safety rule in the car pick-up area of your school, you would put a red sticker on the car pick-up area of the map:

• safety rules (red)
• learning rules (green)
• friendship and relationship rules (gold)
• behaviour rules (blue)
• uniform rules (silver).

Start with your classroom. You don’t need to visit any other classroom as they will most likely have rules much like yours.

When you get back to your class, put your map on the wall. Then look at the stickers on all the maps.

• Do you notice any patterns about where the different coloured stickers are placed?
• Are there more gold and blue stars for the playground than for the toilets?
• What else do you notice?

As a class, write down the top three rules for each area of the school.

Display your list in your classroom.
